welcome LIGHTS!

the ccsa 2007 softball season is fast approaching. the forms are in, the uniforms on order and the sun is out. it’s that time again to dust off those gloves, polish those evos and synergy bats, sanitize those cleats that have been left untouched since last season and get in shape for some good ole fashion softball.

if the weather holds up, LIGHTS will be playing softball this Saturday, 2pm at the bayview fairways, near bayview and john. come out, play some softball, meet the team, take a break from studying for exams and unleash the child inside of you that yearns to be free. free from stress, free from the bondage of our textbooks and study notes, free from algorithms and matrices, free from our dimly lit desks and swivel chairs, free from our roommates, free from the addiction to caffeine and all nighters, and free from msn, icq, asian avenue, friendster, and the deadly facebook. so that we can unite with one voice and exclaim, “free at last!, free at last!”...alrite, who are we kidding...maybe for just 3hrs but it will be a good 3hrs. so come join us for some fun in the sun, see ya all there for the super rusty and slowest runner competition! LOL!

hey everyone,

once again, i just wanted to congratulate you guys on another great season of softball. it's been an honour for me to lead you guys this year and i truly am very proud of this team. i'm proud that we known by other teams in the league to have great softball skills, but more importantly great softball spirit. know that you guys have encouraged me, the leadership team, each other, and other teams in the league. that's what CCSA's about :) ...and it's kinda nice you guys got an award to show for it ;)

i hope you guys had a good season and a good time at fellowship cup too, despite the weather and last minute change of parks on sunday. thanks for taking to heart what LIGHTS is all about and staying strong till the very end. i do hope that this isn't the end tho, eventho the season's over. again, i hope that we can all stay connected with each other as much as possible. maybe we can have a few get togethers during the year....and yes, i'll see what i can do about a christmas party at my house haha. but yeah...come out to SALT on fridays, if you don't already and drop by our service on sundays if you can. you're always welcome and we'd love to have you. and i know i'll see you guys next season :)

thanks again for being such a great team. lights wouldnt' be the same without you guys. oh! i still have a bunch of gifts for those who couldn't make it to my house on saturday but i'll find a way to get them to you. all the best in this coming school year (ew, i know) and in your work places. remember the things you've learned this summer, remember each other, and keep lighting it up wherever you are.

ccsa banquet 2006

it's been a great season of softball and while we didn't make it further into the playoffs, this season has definitely been packed with many memorable moments. we've come along way since we first meet way back in june, so be proud of what you have accomplished and hopefully this experience has changed you in some way. thanx for a great season of softball but more importantly thank you for the friendships that have been built throughout this summer. praise GOD!

as a reminder, the upcoming CCSA softball banquet will be held on thurs. aug. 31/06 at the hilton suites hotel(hwy 7 & warden) starting at 6:30pm(not chinese time!). we'll be seated as a team with the rest of RHCBC's softball teams. so, dress to impress and don't forget your digi cams to take lots of pictures.

for those who have not had enough of softball, the fellowship cup will be held at richvale greenway park starting sat. sept. 02/06. the fellowship cup will be a two day softball event where all the RHCBC's softball teams compete in friendly softball games. the schedule for the two day event is as follows:

sat. 1pm: canaan & lights
sat. 3pm: misfits 1 & lights
sat. 5pm: misfits 2 & lights
sun. 2pm: no game: we cheer!
sun. 4pm: apostles & lights

the tournament will be held at richvale greenway, located just west of hillcrest mall. if you go north on yonge, turn left(west) on 16th ave.(also called carrville road). the second street pass the mall is avenue road and you will turn right(north). follow avenue road for a minute and on your left you will see the parking-lot for the diamonds.

if you are interested in the BBQ on sunday after the fellowship cup, please pay in advance $5.00 at the next LIGHTS softball practice to either joyce or will.

once again this will be a great opportunity for YOU to fellowship with other team players from all our teams including the misfits.

so, end the summer off with a bang and come join LIGHTS for one last bit of SOFTBALL before it all ends.

YES!...LIGHTS are in the playoffs!! It's been an awesome season of softball and all our hard work as paid off. The playoffs will consists of five rounds and follows the format of "win or go home" - basically, if you win, you advance to the next round; but if you lose, you are eliminated. Our first round game is this coming Saturday, August 19, 2006 at 2pm at Wigmore Park. If we advance to the second round, it will also be on the 19th, but at 5:00pm at Wigmore Park.

Several of us are planning on arriving at the park at 11:45am, so if you want a little batting practice before the game, you are very welcome to join us. If not, that's okay, but do not show up later than 1:15pm. If something comes up and you know you're gonna be late, call bobby and let him know so that he knows not to scratch you from the lineup and defense.

Very Important...don't forget to e-mail bobby by thursday midnight sharp and let him know whether or not you can make it to both the 2:00pm and 5:00pm games.

WoW...what a day of softball everyone! LIGHTS would like to thank the Samaritans for a great game of softball packed with amazing plays and lots of team spirit. It was an amazing time of fellowship at Swiss for dinner with lots of laughs and memories. All the best to the Smaritans during the playoffs!

hey lights,
this coming weekend will be our last two games of the regular season. so make a strong effort to join us on saturday at 2pm and sunday at 2pm. it doesn't matter if you're a regular at the games or just coming for the first time. it'll be fun for everyone so lets end the season with a bang! please arrive at the park for both games no later than 1:15pm to warm up and stretch. don't forget to bring plenty of liquids to keep hydrated for the game.

Upcoming doubleheader!

This coming Saturday we have a doubleheader at Scarden, 4pm and 6pm.

Scarden is quite an odd park, in the middle of nowhere, and has a weird outfield. If you can come early (2pm) to practice, come! There is no one playing before our game.

On the map, in the "enter through here", that is a little pathway leading to the park. At the entrance of the pathway there is a sign about dogs (leashes or poop), and across the street is a speed limit sign (40km/hr). The pathway i also lined with a metal fence. Once you are on the path and have walked through the bushes area, turn left and either go down the hill on the right side of the park, or walk a bit further to find a set of stairs leading you down to the third base area. If you have trouble finding it please call one of the leaders.

Where 18 Hillcrest Avenue (it's a condo) - the outdoor patio area
Cost: $5.00 to cover the food

18 Hillcrest Ave. is located just east of Yonge Street, north of Sheppard and south of Finch. Since it's a condo, visitor parking is available but limited. We encourage you to park at the metered parking on Yonge Street, paid parking at the Empress Walk mall, or street parking just east of the building.

GREAT job Lights this past saturday for our double header games! Even though it was smokin' hot outside, everyone kept up their spirits. Teamwork was evident on the field and off, and practice really paid off. Also, thank you goes to all of our fans for helping out and cheering for us!

I was very encouraged that everyone was able to encourage each other and the other team throughout the two games, beyond the encouragement cards. Let's keep this up!!

Lights season 2006

The long awaited season is about to begin! Since the team has been scattered here and there, I will recap some things.

First, here is the schedule, fresh off the excel file:

Note: all games are on Saturdays except July 23 and Aug 13.

For this coming game on May 27, we are at Glamorgan, 2pm.
Group 1 - Syd, Alex and Goldie are in charge of bringing drinks/snacks for the team! Thanks guys.

For those who didn't come to the last few functions, here are 2 imporant things to note:
- Arrive on time
- Notify Bobby whether you can make it or not to every practice or game

At the actual game, remember:
- You must attend the Devos if you play in the game (its either before or after the game)
- Arrive at least 30 mins before the game
- No jewellery
- No swearing/haggling (ie "drop the ball!")
- Don't make umping calls
- HAVE FUN =)

A weekday practice this Thursday at 5:30pm at Helmkay Park. To get there from 16th avenue, turn north one light east of Bayview and 16th, just past the first stop sign you will see a Bayview Hill Public School on your right. Turn into the school, drive into the back by the portables and park there. The diamond is straight ahead at the grass.

If there are any questions/concerns at all, do not hesitate to contact anyone on leadership - Bobby, Will, Janette, Joyce or Becca.

As the season ends with an amazing double header saturday and end of season game on sunday, bittersweet feelings linger in the air. What seemed like a regular softball season resulted in bonds and friendships forged by team comradery and exceptional spirit. A church was united by a simple game of softball. We laughed together, sweat together and cheered together. What more could you ask for? Looking forward to seeing everyone back next year!

The upcoming banquet is on Wed, Aug. 31 at 6:30pm, held at Grand Baccus - Banquet and Conference Centre. (McNicoll and Midland.) If you plan on coming, dress to impress! It'll be the one time everyone will be looking nice and smelling good.

On the weekend of Sept. 3-4 right before school starts is the one event that will take over RHCBC once again, an event even more intense and some say even more important than the ccsa playoffs - the Fellowship Cup! Games will start at 2pm both days, the BBQ is at 6pm on Sunday. Be prepared to play your best Lights!

Games night #2

Our second games night was a success, with lots of yummy food and even more games. Video games, the game of life and a poor attempt at cranium started off the evening. as people piled in, we started to eat. and we had just enough food. after dinner was done, most of the gang joined in for a great game of cranium, this time led by the experts joyce and syd. it was a strenuous game where you worked out ur cranium, in areas of creativity, word puzzles, acting and random facts.

We await Jalen's return, and Ediths arrival!

This coming weekend there won't be any practices and there aren't any games because of the RHCBC retreat to Redeemer.

Mid-season mixer

Wow, what a fun filled weekend we had. Those of you who went to wonderland on saturday knew how awesome it was. There's just way too much to talk about, so I'll let the pictures speak for themselves.

The day started with the team meeting up at the gate to go in together, bright and early at 10am.

We were at wonderland, so of course we went on rides! Something about getting flung around in the air and dropping at ridiculous speeds just gives us a thrill eh?

All the while though, there was a big game of tag going on. Every team was involved in this, and the team with the most accumulated tags at the end of the day won a free table at the banquet. Really, we had nothing to lose. So we played our best, had to make lots of pit stops during the day to give our autographs to people, but it was worth it. Lights came out victorious, winning the table for the banquet!

I think Will put it best when he said, "while bob’s feat of single handedly beating out so many other teams in the tag game was amazing, the lights team really demonstrated what team unity is all about and what more can be achieved when you pull together and have a common goal."

Our day ended with an amazing concert and message. Though not everyone was present, you could feel the unity of the ccsa in that little tent. Imagine if all the players of all 75 teams came out? What an amazing feat that would be.

I'd have to say that the $30 we spend on the ticket was well worth it. We had a great time bonding as a team, won tickets while we were at it, and got to ride on a bunch of rollercoasters too (well not really, considering how many of them werent working) If you didn't get a chance to come to wonderland, you missed out! Going to wonderland and spending the day together is only a small part of what we do as a team. There will be more fun times to come - just make sure you're a part of it when it comes!

Perservering with the Paladins and Lions

It was an innocent Sunday afternoon; the air was crisp, clean and under control. The Lights were fresh off a superb outing and came into this game thinking that it would just be like any other ordinary doubleheader – 4 straight hours of intense sun-bathing with interludes of hard play and cheering, but inevitably end in physical and spiritual drainage.

But nobody would be prepared for the sequence of events that were about to unfold on this fateful summer day.

The first obstacle was the Paladins. Having just played a game earlier in the afternoon, it was assumed that they would be tired. Little did we know, their first game was merely a warm up for the thrashing that would follow. The Lights could not seem to dent the armored defense of the Paladins. Though the pace of the entire game was dictated by the opposition, there was one inning that belonged to us. Like rays of light our hits seethed through the few openings in their clouded defense, and we were able to squeeze out one mercy inning in the top of the 3rd. But by the time the game ended, we were the one’s crying mercy. Our offensive output seemed to invigorate the other team and as a result, they turned up their play and essentially shut us down. We finished the game only scoring 9 points (you do the math). Though the Lights struggled on offense, the outcome of the game is more a testament to the Paladin’s outstanding defense.

Immediately following the game, the Lights had a special devotion involving both the Paladins and the team we were to face next, the Lions. Joyce, the Lights all-star head-governess had graciously prepared a fitting message. Though there are many unwanted detours that we will face along the road of life, God has specially prepared each one, just enough for us to handle, as trials that require and build up perseverance. The bible promises that these trials enable God to shape our character and when we do curve back and head down the straight path, we come out anew with greater maturity and a better understanding of our purpose. The devotion seemed to be an omen for the upcoming game, for a curve ball was about to be thrown and it was aimed straight at the Lights.

The Lights started off the next game firing, scoring 7 runs in the first inning. The Lions, not to be fazed by the blazing start responded with a barrage of hits and runs. The game teetered throughout, like an ultimate chess match, each team making their moves but no team giving up an inch. After scoring 3 runs in the top of the 8th to tie the game, it was up to the Lights to stand strong and hold the mighty bats of the Lions. After an inspiring pep talk by Syd, the Lights head coach, the team held their ground and did not flicker at the gust of adversity and delivered in the clutch. Their suffocating defense recorded the first 3-up-3-down inning in their most important inning this year.

Though it would have been an appropriate conclusion to a hard fought battle on both sides – there are no ties in baseball. Extra innings was into effect and it was now time for the Lights to step up to the plate. After amazing hits and smart base-running by Jay and Rebs, the Lights were able to squeeze out 2 runs – but would that be enough?

A defensive effort similar to the previous inning would have to be repeated to close out the deal. After a quick out at first, a Lion’s batter crushed a ball deep into right and out of the reach of our outfield. They had scored one run. The next hit was a hard liner in the right field gap, and with the fate of the game resting on the fluttering ball, Syd comes running halfway out of nowhere to snag the fly ball and save the game. Two down – one more to go. After a series of infield hits, the Lions managed to load the bases. As the next batter approached the plate, tensions were mounting on both sides, and everybody was on their feet knowing that the outcome of the game would be decided in the next few seconds…the pitch – the swing – the…out? The game ended on an illegal lead off at third. Not to be easily shaken, the Lions were gracious in defeat. And thus concluded, as Andrew Tam, Lights Superfan remarked “the best RHCBC game ever played.”

It is difficult to single out any one player for this game, for we needed every one of the 22 runs to win. From Bi’s flawless catching to Louis’ timely hits, everybody on the team had contributed to the positive spirit and play of the game. The Lights were cheered on by representatives from the Slingers, Dunamis and Apostles who came out to support the team. Also due to their attendance, at the conclusion of the game the first live performance of the church cheer with BOTH the fans and players was performed! After the energizing display the two teams embraced each other and exchanged compliments filled with praise – for we all knew that we had partook in something special. There were no bitter faces, for though one emerged on top in terms of points, both teams were satisfied with their play – on and off the field. This is one game that will forever link the Lions and Lights in years to come. This rivalry may last into the ages, but for this brief moment in time it was the Lights day to shine. Lights 1 – Lions 0…for now.

Though we were down we got up. Though we had suffered a tough loss we continued fighting. Instead of shying away from the contact we fought hard and hit the curve ball out of the park. As a team we marched forward and persevered and, as promised, came out of the game as a more mature and unified team.

This coming saturday there is a regular practice at 3-5pm at helmkay! Please make it out. Practice is an important part of the game of softball, especially to build relationships with the people on the team.

Sunday, July 3 we have a double header at Riseborough (look at the first entry for maps). First game is with the Paladins at 4pm and the second game is with the Lions at 6pm! If you haven't replied to the evite, do so!

Mid-season mixer

As Jan mentioned at our last game, deadlines for tickets for the mid-season mixer at wonderland is approaching. it's being held at Wonderland on Sat. July 16. Tickets are only $30! Wear your team uniform that day at join in a big game of tag with the other teams in the ccsa! In the evening there will be a praise/worship/sharing night also! We encourage everyone from Lights to come! It'll be a lot of fun.

If you are interested in purchasing tickets, contact Janette! Deadline for tickets is July 8.

How the game of "tag" will work:

1. You will get a special CCSA "tag" book once you register at our kiosk at Paramount's Canada Wonderland. The registration kiosk will be by the front gates of the park. Look for our sign!

2. At any time during the day, you "tag" CCSA players from another team by getting their attention and having them autograph the next blank page in your tag book. You must also autograph the book of the person you have just tagged.

3. Show your tag book at the CCSA registration kiosk between 10:00 am and 6:00 pm to record the number of people you have "tagged".

4. The team with the most "tags" will win tickets to the CCSA closing banquet!

Playing on a Sunday afternoon, with temperatures reaching the high 30’s and half the active roster filling up on the McDeal of the day minutes prior to the opening pitch, the elements were stacked against our heroes. Furthermore, they were to face a formidable opponent in the Genesis. Despite all this, the Lights kept their poise and played big. Though only 16 people show up for the game, the team put on an offensive clinic, played solid defense and showed great sportsmanship and spirit.

With the horror of the past game fresh in their memories, the Fab Five controlling the outfield decided to play it safe and play back. After reading the offense a masterful move was made to adjust to Genesis’ batting habits. Subsequently, not a ball was driven past them and all balls were cut off and had back up. Because the outfield had stepped up, the infield had to follow suit. The infield was heavily tested by the Genesis, and the final obstacle came in the bottom of the 7th. Genesis came out firing, expertly exploiting the holes in the infield. Though the relays were crisp, the hustle and heart of Genesis could not be beat. After they had crossed the plate 7 times, however, the Lights shook it off, regrouped and clinched the game with an out at first.

The highlight of the game was in the top of the 6th. Janette (a.k.a. J. Lo) was down 2 in the count, pressure mounting on both batter and pitcher. As both sides waited in anticipation, Alex (a.k.a. Chouji), not to be overcome with emotion, tossed a perfect pitch over the plate and Janette hammered it into the left field gap. Though it was a close play at home, no one was going to take this away from her. J. Lo’s great hit and awesome base running resulted in her first home run this season – and sure won’t be her last. Other notable performances include the Bri-pod’s three home runs, Stacey’s attempt at the Church cheer, Genesis’ general co-operativity and spirit and the electric-current cheer! Keep it up Lights. Johnny's nose
on sundays game, right before an inning, the infield was throwing the ball around. johnny was walking through the infield, thinking "man, i wouldn't want to play first base because you might get hit in the face," and before he could even finish his thought, someone yells "johnny!" and he turns around and BAM, the ball hits him in the face and shatters his glasses, giving him a nice bump on his nose. i'm glad to inform you though that hes okay now! now hes going to start wearing contacts to play.. hehe

good game lights! first game of the season. even though we didnt win, we did put in a good effort. im really glad that a lot of ppl came out! (now, if only everyone came out to practices..) now that u get a feeling for the game, lets keep it up! encouragement and spirit is how the game of softball is played. see you all on saturday for practice at 3pm, and then games night at syds house!

Many of us live busy and fast-paced lives. We all have responsibilities, things to do and places to be. But on the road of life, too often we neglect to slow down adn be at a speed that is best for our well-being.

On our journey, many times we miss what God may be trying to say or show us because we're going too fast. If we are to find out the great plans that God has for us, we need to slow down, be still, and take the time to listen and rest. It is then that we give God space to speak and renew ours trength.
